In a heartfelt statement released today, Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has announced his departure from the club after just one season. The German international, who joined the Catalan giants from Manchester City last summer, expressed his gratitude for the experience but revealed that his departure was motivated by financial reasons.

“Dear Culers,” Gündogan wrote in a letter to the Barcelona fanbase, “After just one year, it’s already time to say goodbye. I came here to face a new, exciting challenge, and I was ready for it. I have given everything to fight for the team and the club the best possible way in a difficult season and I was looking forward to helping my teammates in the new campaign.”

Despite his desire to continue his journey at Barcelona, Gündogan acknowledged that his departure could provide a much-needed financial boost to the club. “Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad,” he explained.

Gündogan reflected on his time at Barcelona with fondness, recalling the incredible experiences and challenges he faced. “It’s been a time with incredible experiences and ups and downs,” he said. “I always wanted to play at Barça, and I am very grateful for a memory and experience that I will remember for my life.”

As Gündogan departs, he expressed his best wishes for the club and its supporters. “I wish you the best for the season and for the future,” he concluded. “The fans deserve to get this big club back to the world’s best.”

Visca el Barça!
